Round 1 Seniors Match Report

Emmaus St Leos:  14.10-94

MHSOBFC:  19.11-125

There is always anticipation in the air as Round 1 approaches, and the anticipation for the Seniors was heightened by the news Thursday evening of 8 debutantes for the Round 1 clash with the Animals. Still seething from an 1 point defeat early in Season 2017, it was imperative that the Unicorns started their 2018 campaign the right way. Despite clear instruction from Coach Project – the Unicorns were slow to start, outplayed early by a fast starting pack of Animals, and held to just 0.2 in the first quarter.

The team settled early in the 2nd quarter and were sparked by James Tran kicking the Unicorns firs goal of the game. The second quarter was played in three distinct parts, where teams exchanged the momentum. However, the Unicorns would make the most of their opportunities and kick 7 goals for the term to go in at the half within striking distance.

The Unicorns were able to continue the momentum from the end of the first half in to the third quarter, when the midfield truly started to take control – lead by the Unicorns best on the day – Jye Sandiford. Multiple goals for Smith, Neville & Beale afforded a little cushion and allowed the Unicorns to enter the final change with a 17 point lead.

The fourth quarter was played on the Unicorns terms, another 7 goal quarter with a few stars of the future Louis Phillips & Chris Tetaz featuring prominently. It was a slow start to the game, but after finding the next gear the Unicorns were able to score 123 points in three quarters of football.

Best performers for the day were Jye, The Noodle, and Will Maurice who provided a strong presence down back all day. Multiple goalkickers were Smith, Neville, Tetaz & Beale. Congratulations to Jye, Gerard (The Noodle) Arangio, Cam Neville, Ged Colreavy, Alex Barbas, Brad Jordan, Chris Tetaz, Louis Phillips & Jacob Smith for their senior debuts at MHSOBFC.
