Round 13 Under 21 Match Report

Chadstone AFC 10.13- 73

MHSOB Maroon – 9.12 66

The ‘Corns, fresh off the bye, were looking to bounce back after the previous round’s loss to ladder leader Hawthorn AFC. Playing on a beautiful Saturday morning, the contest was a hard-fought slog from start to finish.

Our first quarter was matched by Chadstone; as we led by a solitary point going into the break. Hard, committed tackling pressure from both sides proved troublesome for free-flowing football, as hard work by impressive midfielders Darcy Willmott and Lachlan Dowling providing some rewards up in the forward half, with the ever resourceful Ashan Wijayakumara kicking two relatively easy snags. It pays to be in the right place, at the right time.

We needed to lift, to cause some sort of separation between the sides, but unfortunately that was not an option available, as the two teams grounded out a equal scoring half, 12 points all, however masking the fact the scoring shots were 7 (1.6), to 2 (2.0) in Chadstone’s favour. With the switch being made to use on the’Corns, finding good possession and time on the ball proved difficult. Despite that, out defence worked tirelessly to quash entry after entry into the forward 50, particularly through the notable efforts of William Penhalluriack and the ever reliable Jarrod Growse.

The third quarter was, in light terms, an umpiring farce. Scenes that have never been seen before in the 5 year career of the writer, including a ball up whilst a team was still in a huddle, and a head count, caused a significant chunk of the third quarter to be eaten up as dead time.

And here, the younger Jnrcorns lost their heads. Taking our concentration away from the game, it proved costly, as the inexperienced team were made to be second best, going into the final quarter down by 14 points.

Coming out and lifting in the 4th was a given, however, our goal kicking inaccuracy proved costly, our 2.8 (20) falling to a 2.1 (13) point return from Chadstone, as two late goals sealed their win.

Finals are on the Horizon, but much work needs to be done, both above the shoulders and below the knee, if we are going to be making waves.
