Round 14 Under 21 Match Report

MHSOB                                 4.12-36

Prahran Assumption  17.13-115

Coming off a couple of tough losses, the development squad were still looking for that important win to lock in a finals spot. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be this week in what was our worst performance of the year by far.

With the Woodfull-Miller already hosting a triple header, we were shipped off to the lowly Elsternwick Park Ground 2. With more potholes than grass, the ground was far from the best we’ve played on. We kicked the day off with a very unexpected 21 questions performance from young forward Matt “Adele” Glover. Matty then continued the entertainment out on the field kicking the first goal of the match, courtesy of a never-before-seen Ashan handball.

From there on in however, it was all downhill.

Prahran responded almost immediately, with their experienced ruckman dominating clearances. The small deck made it hard work for the defence as Prahran pushed with repeat inside 50s. With Byron Gunn and Jeremy Chadwick both playing injured, it was always going to be a hard day. The two defenders however showed more heart than anyone, but couldn’t do it all themselves as the goals quickly piled on for Prahran.

By halftime, the score line was a grim 9 goals to 2, but coming out for the 3rd quarter there was still belief in the team and our intensity lifted. Flynn started things with a massive run down the wing with a couple of bounces thanks to a massive shepherd from James Timson. The efforts from both players showed the fight that was missing in the first half. Alec “Stick” Webster continued on, kicking one of the solo goals of the year after taking on 5 would be tacklers, the celebration showing we were still in this game.

But after the initial shock Prahran crawled back into it, with the quarter ending 2 goals apiece. Unfortunately, we couldn’t maintain this intensity in the last quarter after Prahran kicked a couple of quick goals, the heads on our young team dropped, as the opposition strolled in to kick 6 unanswered goal in what was a very disappointing end to the game.

With the result pushing us down to 4th, we are now in a fight for a finals spot but thankfully, our finals chances are still in our own hands. 2 wins from 2 games is the very simple equation, starting next week in a blockbuster against Ormond.
