The MHSOBFC Reserves juggernaut continued the 2019 campaign against the Yarra Valley Bushrangers – who are in a tussle to be playing footy in September.
Traditionally, the Bushrangers have brought a physical contest, and this game was no different with plenty of tight stoppages and fierce tackling straight out of the blocks shown by both sides – with the Unicorns able to put together some neat passages and be up two kicks at the first break.
With the coach throwing around some magnets at the break, the second quarter saw Chris Tetaz put on some flair with blistering pace out of the centre stoppages. The running power of the Unicorns started to look too much for Yarra Valley, and without punishing them on the scoreboard just yet, were able to go into the main break 34 points up.
The third quarter saw some lacklustre moments in concentration for the Unicorns and it was evident Yarra Valley had not given up the fight, bringing back the intensity they demonstrated in the first quarter. However, some strong defence by the pair of golden fists, Disco Gumley and Zac Smooker, allowed the Unicorns to regain their composure and switch back on mentally going into the last.
Some nice gut running from the Unicorns on a hot afternoon to finish out the day allowed them to regain a commanding control of the game, with a nice spread of goalkickers taking a lot of the sting out of the Bushrangers efforts. The Unicorns maintained their unbeaten record and healthy percentage, taking the chocolates as 47 point victors.
