Saturday evening saw the unicorns face off against Power House AFC in round 9 of the division 2 regular season. Heading into the game both teams sat outside of the top four, both chasing a crucial win to spur on their finals hopes.
Despite the slippery conditions, the first quarter saw a combined 12 shots at goal with the Unicorns leading the first break by 7 points. For majority of the first half the Unicorns held ascendency on the scoreboard, leading by a first half high of 22 points. This margin was closed to 12 points by the long break.
The start of the second half saw Power House come out strongly and even the scores. The Unicorns ability to withstand the Power House push was tested. Crucial breakwaway clearances and an out of the pack snap goal by Bryce Hayes saw the corns stabilise. Tim Strickland was a presence all day hitting the scoreboard at both ends in clinical fashion.
The fourth quarter commenced with the Corns up by 22 points and looking to put the contest to bed. That was never in question with a 5 goal last quarter from Tim Strickland, who subsequently ended with 10 goals. The Corns kicked 7 goals to Power House 1 in the last quarter and ran away 58 point winners. Among the influential players across the ground were Tim Strickland with his haul of 10 goals, Brad Jordan’s strong contested work across all four quarters and Bryce Hayes key momentum swinging plays.
Next week sees the Unicorns face Yarra Old Grammarians at Doncaster Reserve.
