Seniors Round 5 2022
Coming off a strong result last week against Aquinas, the Seniors wanted to keep their momentum going with another strong performance against Bullen Templestowe. With a range of players out due to injury and Covid, the boys rallied with 8 changes.
Despite their record, we knew Bulleen would pose an intense fight with pressure around the ball. However, with some strong performances from Jules Eimutis and Will Cardwell, the unicorns were able to control the middle of the ground. Providing needed support, our backline proved immeasurable with strong performances from Joel Cheston, Sam Danks & Sean Lester, providing leadership and rebound from the back 50. With tough kicking conditions restricting us in the first quarter, the team should have provided greater scoreboard pressure, but left Bulleen in the game. The second quarter proved a strong defensive battle against the wind, however the team were able to contain the intense pressure whilst also adding scoreboard pressure.
A rally from BP proved needed at half time, as although we were mostly in control of the game, our wayward kicking and poor decision making at times left the door open. With the windy conditions settling towards the start of the new half, some strong offensive pressure from Ashan Wijayakumara and Steve Edmonds paid reward to the tough work for the rest of the team.
Keeping Bulleen Templestowe to only 5 scoring shots for the game was a strong effort from our back six, however with 17 more scoring shots, the Unicorns should have run away with the game. A greater emphasis on goal kicking and decision making is important to continue our winning streak against Power House next week, and although there win record is unfavourable, the Corns can’t go in thinking the opposition will just roll over.
