Seniors Round 15 2021

A trip out to Ransford Oval saw the Corns take on West Brunswick on Saturday afternoon. Coming off a defeat in the Reserves, and with both teams vying for top 2, it was certainly going to be a test ahead of our finals campaign.

The Corns started hot in the first quarter, booting 3 goals to 1 to take a lead into quarter time. Tim Campelj’s great work around the contest, which persisted throughout the day, gave us the ascendancy early. West Brunswick were kept goalless in the second quarter due to the dominance of Angus Lane and Damian Proksa, who repelled attacks and distributed the ball out of defensive 50 effectively. This proved too much for West Brunswick in the first half, as we went into the main break with a 5 goal lead.

West Brunswick were quick to respond in the third quarter, coming out and taking the fight up to us. A four goal to two third term meant that it was likely to be a tight finish. Dominant transition play was led by Scott Braithwaite and Liam Littore, who picked apart the opposition defence to find targets inside 50. Kane Smith and Hugh Radcliffe-Smith each finished with 3 majors, whilst Ashan Wikayakumara extended his lead on the goal kickers leader board with two more snags.

It took a four quarter performance, but the Corns took home the points, securing second spot on the ladder. It was an important taste of finals footy, which is now just around the corner.
