R14 2023 | Thirds vs Canterbury

The Thirds came up against Canterbury for the third time this season, coming off a two-week layoff following the mid-season competition bye and forfeit last weekend. It was reinforced to the team of the importance of getting off to a good start and building momentum heading towards finals.

The Thirds got on top early through the midfield due to strong ruckwork by Adam Ashton and Charlie Colman. Midfielder Karl Lugod set the standard early with his tackling while teammate Jye Gillespie’s ball use was a feature all day, lowering the eyes and hitting up the forwards, finishing the day with four goals himself.

The entire backline was immense only conceding one goal for the whole game. They were ably led by the returning Sam Habteslassie, with Josh Crigan and Lucas Blatchford providing some much needed drive off of half back, and Reserves regular Trav Johnson bringing some aggression.

Sam Bonser made a very welcome return working up the ground and assisting our transition of the ball into the forward line. Key forward Jamie Shulman had another day out against Canterbury’s backline, proving to be a handful with his strong leading patterns. He finished with seven goals which should all but wrap up him winning the Division 5 Thirds goal kicking competition. The final score line ended with the Thirds winning 117 to 7.

Overall it was a really pleasing victory with the Thirds winning by 110 points. The team played a strong brand of footy for the entire four quarters, complemented by a selfless team-first attitude. It sets us up nicely for the final two matches before we head into finals.
