R7 2024 | Thirds at Whitefriars

MHSOBFC came up against divisional rivals Whitefriars for their round seven matchup on a brisk Saturday morning in Donvale.

What ensued was a challenging match against a well-drilled team on their home deck, made even tougher due to some last-minute personnel changes. In spite of that, the entire Unicorns backline stood up against a barrage of entries all day and assisted each other throughout the day. In particular, Lucas Blatchford intercepted countless forward 50 entries by Whitefriars.

Regular ruckman Adam Ashton sustained a broken finger in the previous game, which meant the team had to play with next to no tall players at all. However, it was an opportunity for others to step up, with Chris Fotinos and Karl Lugod making life tough for the opposition all day acting as additional midfielder at stoppages.

It was also a tough game for the forwards who had their supply restricted given the ball spent most of the time in the Unicorns’ back half. This was due in part to an inability to transition up the ground and retain possession in the front half.

One positive to come out of the game was George Ellard, a new import to the game, who kicked his first ever goal. The Thirds also welcomed two debutants, Will Oung and Davish Gaonjur, for their first games at the club, and saw the return of Karl Lugod and Dan Giusti for their first games for the season.

Attention turns to next week's important match against West Brunswick at Ransford Oval.

Goal Kickers: Jamie Shulman 2, Bryce Kennett, Chris Fotinos, George Ellard
