R3 2023 | U20s vs Pegs

Round 3’s clash with PEGS was held at the VAFA's unofficial home ground situated beneath the cherished Castle on the Hill. The message from the coaches was one of playing to our distinct style, and being confident knowing the result would take care of itself. However, the first quarter was one filled with carnage for the Unicorns, as co-captain Bailey Gallop was forced to withdraw from play following a severe head injury, and defender Gabe Wines-Winch (Goose Jnr) sustained a knee injury. Despite these setbacks, the team persevered valiantly against a formidable opposition to be down by 26 points at the first break.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern with the Unicorns struggling to find their footing and conceding some straightforward goals from forward stoppages. Noteworthy moments included the commendable efforts of key defender Nathan Wood, who acted as an impregnable bulwark at full back, repelling repeated attacks from the opposition. Additionally, recruit & key forward Antonio Mastroianni exhibited impressive skill and strength by launching a rocket from 40 metres out while fending off three players. The halftime score showed a 47-point deficit in favour of PEGS.

The team received a resolute message emphasising the importance of accountability, which spurred them on as they returned to their respective positions to commence the second half. The Unicorns showed significant improvement, displaying a higher intensity that was matched by PEGS. The midfield of Brayden Swenson, Cam Witt, Matt Giaracca, and Lachie O'Halloran worked tirelessly to create scoring opportunities for the forwards. Despite numerous chances, it was Antonio who again showcased his remarkable power and finesse, fending off multiple opponents to unleash another missile from the arc. Meanwhile, Nathan Wood and James Dimogotsi worked in sync down back to generate crucial run out of the backline and create opportunities for the forwards. However, PEGS increased their momentum during the quarter and took a commanding 63-point lead at the final break.

At the beginning of the final quarter, the Unicorns demonstrated their potential and determination, executing some fluid ball movement that started with Matt Giaracca and finished with Tom Cowley, who having switched from the backline to up forward, scored his first goal of the season. A great final quarter highlighted the Unicorns’ capability, which was only stopped by a lack of execution in front of goal. PEGS showed their mettle demonstrating their physical prowess around the ball and impressive skills, to finish the game as 91-point winners.
