R4 2023 | U20s at Old Xaverians

Cold and rainy conditions set the scene for an away game of tough wet weather footy against Old Xaverians. The Unicorns started the game under siege and the defence was put to the sword early, leading to Xavs dominating the first quarter. Playing the conditions better, the Xaverians were able to get the ball deep inside fifty to one-on-one contests throughout the quarter and put on two goals to 0 in the first term.

In the second quarter, an arm wrestle ensued. Both teams couldn’t break out of the slow, contested and congested game style, and despite impressive quarters from midfielders Cameron Witt and James Dimogotsi, the Unicorns were unable to capitalise, kicking four behinds for the quarter. Defenders Adam Stikoltzik and Nathan Wood were pivotal in defence, continuously impacting the contest by spoiling, intercepting and nullifying the impact of the opposition forwards, and keeping the margin within reach.

The third quarter was a complete slugfest with both offences struggling. Both teams fought unsuccessfully to get the ball out of congestion, but the waterlogged footy and the puddles all over the ground slowed down the game, with both teams managing only two combined behinds. Both defences were extremely successful in restricting offensive opportunities, resulting in the Unicorns being down by 20 points going into the final change.

The final term brought more offence with Xavs managing two more goals and the Unicorns kicking another four behinds. For the entire game, both teams struggled to get the ball out of congestion, with neither team having many uncontested possessions. Strong performances throughout the game were had by Adam Stikoltzik, Bailey Elder, Brayden Swenson, James Dimogotsi and Cameron Witt. Defender Nathan Wood also had a really impressive game shutting down his opponent who threatened to tear the game apart early. Overall, inaccuracy in front of goal and some composure around the ball cost the Unicorns who managed only 10 behinds all game and fell short by 30 points.
