R1 2024 | U20s vs Collegians

Commencing the new season on home turf against Collegians, the U20s were under the on-field leadership of newly appointed captain, Lachlan O'Halloran. The team was brimming with confidence as they geared up to kick off their 2024 campaign.

The first half started off sluggishly for the Unicorns. Collegians capitalised on repeated forward 50 entries, amassing six goals while the home side managed just four behinds in the opening quarter. Defenders Idhant Yarlagadda and Austin Reynolds worked tirelessly to fend off relentless attacks, while midfielders Cameron Witt and Mark Fenwick continued their impressive preseason form, applying pressure on the ball. By halftime, Collegians led with a scoreline of 9.7-61 to 1.6-12.

During the second half, head coach Matthew Glover urged his forwards and midfielders to intensify their efforts and adhere to our high risk, high reward methodology of ball movement. This directive yielded immediate results as James Dimogotsi scored a goal from 45 meters out, courtesy of great work from the Unicorns midfielders. Despite the team’s resilience, Collegians continued to pile on goals in the final quarter.

The Unicorns’ never-say-die attitude was evident, with Lucas Judd and Minro Eshwara's relentless tackling providing inspiration despite a depleted bench. Ultimately, Collegians emerged as 114-point victors. Nonetheless, the squad's commitment couldn't be questioned, with players putting their body on the line regardless of the scoreline.
