R2 2025 | Dev Squad vs Caulfield GRammar
After a tough 2024 campaign, the JnrCorns entered the new season with fresh energy, a new look, and a new attitude. With Kevin Pious taking the reins as head coach and joined by assistant coach Joseph Pious, there was a clear buzz around the launch of the “Development Squad.” A strong preseason had built belief in the group, and Round 1 at Woodfull-Miller, as part of a triple-header against Caulfield Grammar, was set to be a fresh start. Several new faces joined the squad, including eight players from our growing partnership with Richmond Juniors and a solid cohort from Melbourne High. The tone was set—this was a new group with plenty of promise.
Unfortunately, Caulfield came out of the blocks flying, and we were caught off guard early. A sluggish start saw our defence scrambling, midfield struggling to connect, and our forwards unable to get into the game. We were staring at a 43-point deficit by quarter time, with the scoreboard reading 2–45.
Coach Kevin delivered a passionate message at the break, not about the scoreboard, but about pride, effort, and taking control of our story. And the response came. Led by tireless efforts in the middle from Matt Giarracca and Matt Haberfield, the JnrCorns began to find their rhythm. In a new role up forward, Bailey Gallop proved a handful for Caulfield’s defence, clunking strong marks and finishing with confidence. Ollie Baillie and Callum Hackman were standouts across half-back, creating drive and rebounding well, while forwards Jonty Chandler and Blake Italiano applied relentless pressure, showing the kind of two-way effort we’re proud of.

Despite the momentum shift, Caulfield’s class still shone through, and they extended their lead at the main break to 68–14. In the third quarter, fatigue and injuries tested our depth, but it gave others a chance to step up. Ben Tyrrell made an instant impact with his pressure and contested work in the guts, complementing the efforts of Giarracca. Gallop added another major, bringing his tally to four by the final siren—our lone goalkicker on the day. Despite the scoreboard (162–29), there’s plenty of upside. The heart shown after quarter time, the glimpses of chemistry, and the new talent on display point to a squad that is building towards something greater.
The Easter break comes at a good time. It’s a chance to reset, refocus, and recharge. And when we return, you can bet the JnrCorns will be ready to bring the heat against AJAX as they chase official win number two (round 1 was a forfeit in our favour) in season 2025.
