R6 2024 | U20s vs St Marys Salesian
After a challenging previous game, the U20s returned home to face off against St Marys Salesian, aiming for an early victory in their newly regraded division.
With a rare 2pm game scheduled on the Woodfull-Miller Oval, both teams entered the first quarter prepared for battle. St Marys Salesian surged ahead with the first five goals, but MHSOBFC’s midfield fought back, adding pressure on the scoreboard with two late goals. Despite St Marys initial dominance, the Unicorns showed they could still compete and at quarter time they trailed 6.4-40 to 2.1-13.
In the second quarter, the Unicorns struggled to find their footing while St Marys Salesian gained momentum. They kicked 4.5-29 while MHSOBFC managed a measly three behinds for the term. This setback left them trailing significantly at halftime, 10.9-69 to 2.4-16.
In the third quarter, St Marys Salesian continued to extend their lead with a series of early goals. Despite the efforts of MHSOBFC’s backline, they struggled to contain the opposition's attacks. Hamish Webb and Lachie Sharrock managed to provide some drive, resulting in a late goal for the green, maroon and black. St Mary’s Salesian would maintain control, leading 17.13-115 to 3.5-23.
The final quarter was set as an internal challenge for the Unicorns, but they struggled to convert opportunities into scoreboard pressure and allowed a further five consecutive goals themselves. However, a clever goal from defender-turned-forward Minro Eshwara shifted the momentum, allowing Melbourne High to respond with four consecutive goals to end the game. Despite the late surge, the final score went the way of St Marys Salesian to the tune of 109 points.
Despite the defeat, the Unicorns showed resilience, especially with their late surge in the final quarter. This display of determination hints at the team's potential for growth and success in the future, provided they continue to build cohesion and consistency at training sessions.
