Thirds Round 1 2022

After a big summer of table-to-mouth weights and repeat sprints from the ATM to the TAB, the 3rds were primed for Round One against Chadstone, led out by their new captain and club stalwart Albert Kuang.

With a mixture of returning legends and sprightly up-and-comers taking the field, the two sides traded goals in an even first quarter. Unfortunately, Chadstone were able to get on top and kick away in the second, in spite of the efforts of debutant full-back Matt Leyland, who acquitted himself well against some genuine trucks rolling through full-forward.

After stemming the bleeding, both metaphorically and literally, in the third quarter, the decision was made to take the handbrake off and play some full-throttle footy in the last. Really pleasingly, this resulted in three goals on the trot, including a three kick, three mark, coast-to-coast effort initiated by the 3rds very own long haired and long sleeved defensive playmaker Lucas Blatchford. Ultimately, Chadstone kicked a few in junk time to pad the margin, but there was a lot to like about the Unicorn 3rds’ Round One effort. Special mention goes to the Shulman brothers, Jamie and Alex, who both put in a Herculean shift all day at the coalface. It was also really special to see former captain Liam Ferris get on the end of a couple, after having his 2021 season ruined by debilitating injury. Go ‘Corns!

Final Score: MHSOBFC 3rds 5.6.36 def by Chadstone 13.18.96

Goals: Ferris 2, J Shulman 2, A Shulman 1

Best: J Shulman, A Shulman, Blatchford, Collopy
