R5 2023 | Thirds vs Canterbury

The Thirds returned home to the Woodfull-Miller Oval against Canterbury after the re-shuffling of the Division 5 fixture.

The team got off to a bright start, kicking the first two goals of the game and providing plenty of energy around the ball, however a few missed opportunities in front of goal as well as conceding two goals meant Canterbury were still in with a sniff at quarter time.

The second quarter was arguably our poorest quarter all season with Canterbury getting on top in all parts of the ground kicking 3.3 to the Unicorns’ 0.2.

A rev up at half time meant the boys came out with a bit more energy and dare in the third quarter. Sam Bonser and Albert Kuang started to get on top in the midfield, assisted strongly by Will Vann in the ruck with a few more opportunities coming the forwards’ way. The defensive unit began to work more cohesively as well, keeping Canterbury scoreless in the term.

The final quarter saw us keep up the momentum and get on top by six points midway through, however a goal against the run of play in the final two minutes of the game saw Canterbury hold on for a draw. A just result.

Whilst it was disappointing, the great thing about footy is the chance to respond next week in another home game against Elsternwick.

Final Score: MHSOB: 6.4-40 drew with Canterbury: 5.10-40
