Reserves Round 1 2021

R1 vs Glen Eira

After 18 months ‘between drinks’ how good was it to finally have footy back! Coming up against Glen Eira, whom we had some good battles with in season 2019, the boys were all very excited for the first bounce.

The new season offered some of our recent JnrCorn graduates and new faces to the club the opportunity to make their senior (and Unicorns) debuts. Excitingly, all of our new players equipped themselves fantastically which bodes well for a strong season ahead.

The opening quarter saw the Unicorns hit the lead early thanks to a goal from ‘Bull’ Durham. From there, gale force winds and heavy rain made for challenging conditions and subsequent inaccuracy at times in front of goal. Xab Twyman made the challenging conditions look easy, constantly providing strong drive through the middle of the ground.

After already playing a half in the dev squad earlier in the day, Al Rogers was as tough as nails through the midfield and partnered well with Woody the clearance king in the second half. Nat Campbell also stamped himself on the game with an impressive display kicking 3 goals. With only a couple of points in it at the last change, the game was up for grabs.

The last quarter was hotly contested, with Glen Eira just edging us out at the end with a couple of late goals. To summarise the game, there was a lot to like first up with many promising signs, however, there was also a bit for us to work on moving forward.
