R1 2024 | Reserves at Hawthorn

Footy made its long-awaited return, and the Reserves were eager to hit the field again after narrowly missing out on the grand final in the 2023 season.

The season opener pitted the Unicorns against Hawthorn in an away game and it was fantastic to see six new players make their debut in the first game of the year. During the offseason, the ‘Pez footy factory’ delivered two standout recruits in Matt Robertson and Jake 'the soldier' Smith. Robbo made a spectacular return to the game after an 11-year hiatus, kicking an impressive eight goals in his comeback match. Meanwhile, Smithy showcased his toughness in the midfield, consistently winning the ball for the green, maroon and black.

MHS Old Boy James Lake also put in a dominant performance on the wing in his debut for the club. A special shoutout to expats Billy Mullin and Fraser McGlashan, who were gallant in their first ever game of football. Billy's first goal and subsequent celebration was undoubtedly a highlight of the day.

The team wasted no time picking up where they left off last year, surging to a commanding 43-14 lead at quarter time. The momentum continued in the second quarter, with the lead stretching to 44 points, with the scoreboard reading 66-22 at halftime.

As fatigue set in during the second half, both teams grappled with heavy legs and a few injuries, leading to a more open and flowing game. Ultimately, it was the Unicorns who emerged victorious with a dominant 59-point victory, 119-60.

Overall, it was a strong team effort, with every player stepping up and fulfilling their role on the day. We look forward to taking on South Melbourne Districts in a preliminary final rematch next weekend at the home of amateur football.
