R2 2024 | Reserves vs South Melbourne Districts
Round two brought together the two preliminary finalists of last season, MHSOBFC and South Melbourne Districts, in another clash with both teams looking to set up a strong start to their respective campaigns.
The first quarter was a low scoring affair, perhaps attributed to the rust of the offseason. Both teams battled hard to establish ground dominance, Mason Fennessy-Kent and Rob Rae working tirelessly at the coal face and along the wing. Unfortunately, a well drilled South Melbourne took the edge in the first quarter, leading 3.3-21 to 2.1-13.
The second quarter was much the same, as although tight, the visitors seemed to have the better of the chances, working effectively to win the lion’s share of clearances and limit deep, fast forward entry. MHSOBFC’s forwards moved higher up the ground, with James ‘Stretch’ Cusack leading high and attacking the contest well, whilst rotating into the ruck to good effect. The half time whistle brought the scoreline of MHSOB 4.6-30 to South Melbourne 8.4-32.
Unfortunately for the home fans, the tide of the game swung deeply to the opposition over the next half, as they kept the ball firmly entrenched in their attacking half. Despite the pressure, co-captain Taylor ‘Tofu’ Raymond and Jack Bourke were sublime in their contest and intercept work, whilst Aditya Munukutla down the other end, kept running until the end and showed impressive work rate and commitment to the cause. One point of joy for the Unicorns was Billy Mullin, Irish import of rugby union pedigree turned half forward, kicking another wonderful goal to add to his season tally.
The final score was a lopsided victory for the visitors, MHSOBFC 8.10-58 defeated by South Melbourne 16.18-114. The reserves will look to next week’s match against Aquinas to return back to the winner’s list.
