R6 2023 | Seniors at Whitefriars

The Seniors came to the Whitefriars College Oval upbeat after their previous victory and looking to make it four wins in a row. However, their first quarter did not quite match it, as Whitefriars came out of the blocks with a bang kicking 5.6 to MHSOB’s 1.4, despite some standout efforts from key forward and ruckman William Hellier.

A response was needed in the second quarter, and the Unicorns lifted, with William Suhr doing a great tandem from ruck to forward as he slotted truly, as well as perennial goalkicker Matthew Pereira. Able to curtail the hot start of their opposition, Whitefriars’ lead was cut from 26 points at the first break to just three at the half.

The third quarter was an opportunity to assert dominance over the contest and the Unicorns duly delivered. Excellent efforts from Will Cardwell in the middle, as well as Aditya ‘Dish’ Munukutla down back, helped stifle Whitefriars as the away side started turning the screws. Despite lacklustre accuracy from both sides, the Unicorns kicked ahead to grab a 17-point lead going into the final quarter.

The last quarter was a dead heat in terms of scoring. But the hard-fought lead in the third quarter was protected and the Unicorns ran out deserved 17-point winners.
