R7 2023 | Seniors vs Brunswick

The Seniors looked to continue their commanding recent form and press on with their finals aspirations but ran into a stern test against top-of-the-ladder Brunswick.

Whilst MHSOB dominated the first quarter, including superb efforts by Will Hellier and Sam Hayes, they were left lacking on the scoreboard, with wasteful goal kicking resulting in a return of 3.7-25, to Brunswick’s 1.1-7.

Much to the home team’s frustration, the trend worsened in the second, kicking 1.6-12. With three less scoring shots, Brunswick kicked 3.1, and the halftime scored resulted in a lead of just 11 points to the Unicorns. Down back, Brendan Cook and Mitch Wilson worked tirelessly to help stem the attacking output of the opposition.

The third quarter was one to remember, but sadly just for the away team, as they piled on five goals in the period to erase the lead and earn a seven-point buffer going into the final term.

The final quarter was nothing less than a dogfight between two teams desperate to get the four points. With three lead changes, including a superb two-minute double from Hugh Radcliffe Smith and Nathan Volk, the stage was set for the comeback to be complete, with ten minutes to go and a one-point margin in favour of the away side. However, much to the local fans’ dismay, Brunswick held their nerve and exited the game victorious, to the tune of nine points.
