R13 2023 | Seniors vs St Mary’s Salesian

Finals hopefuls MHSOB welcomed St Mary’s Salesian during the TAC’s Road Safety Round, looking to build into the final month of the regular season. The home side welcomed two debutants from the U/20s, Lachlan O’Halloran and Nathan Wood, to add some spark and vigour to the team.

The visitors came out strongly in the first term, pushing hard to establish an early lead. Despite strong efforts in the middle of the ground by Julian Eimutis and Nathan Volk, the sluggish start left the Unicorns 13 points in arrears, 1.3-9 to 3.4-22.

With the onus on the home side to change the script in the second term, they duly delivered, generating nine scoring shots. The returning Angus Lane, in combination with Will Hellier up forward, were bright spots during this period. Sadly, the dominance didn’t translate to the scoreboard, managing only 2.7-19, bringing their half time score to 3.10-28, still seven points shy of St Mary’s Salesian’s 5.5-35.

The game continued to deliver in the third term, as both teams traded blows on the scoreboard. Matthew Pereira continued to show his quality up forward with three goals for the game, and down back Mitchell Wilson was tireless in his defensive endeavours. Going into the final term, the game was tied 56 apiece.

In a final term full of twists, a minute advantage in efficiency proved to be the difference maker, as St Mary’s held onto a slender lead and pipped the home side with a two-point win.
