R14 2023 | Seniors at South Melbourne Districts
In the afternoon sun, MHSOB faced South Melbourne, their finals aspirations effectively hanging on a win against quality opposition, in tricky conditions.
It was however the home side that made the early running, putting together strong ball movement resulting in nine scoring opportunities. For the Unicorns, effectively starved of the ball, just one goal proved to be all for the term. Although losing the quarter, South’s wayward kicking left the Unicorns well and truly in the fight, 18 points down at the end of the term. Down back, Angus Lane was impressive, and would continue to be for the game.
The second term brought a resurgent Unicorns outfit, storming back into the game at both ends of the field. Lachie Dowling kicked true, in an impressive game of four majors, well supported up top by William Hellier and Will Kruyt. Effectively wiping the slow start, the Unicorns entered the main break three points in arrears.
Fighting the elements in the third quarter, the script flipped again, with South Melbourne enjoying the lion's share of field position and shots on goal. Sean Lester continued his strong return as a tireless contributor in the backline, joined by another U/20s debutant Adam Pacak, who was impressive with his decision making and skills. The Unicorns kept the game well and truly winnable, with the lead to the home side just eight points going into a crucial fourth quarter.
A tense climax awaited, as scoring shots dried up for both teams. With scores even with minutes to go, the stage was set for a grandstand finish, but sadly for the Unicorns, the spoils went to South Melbourne, who kicked true to win the game by six points.
