R13 2024 | Seniors vs Wattle Park

The MHSOBFC Unicorns emerged victorious from a muddy and low-scoring encounter against Wattle Park, securing a crucial 67-47 win. While the final scoreline might not suggest a tense battle, the Unicorns battled hard for every point. This win keeps their finals aspirations alive, with next week's clash against Whitefriars being a must-win encounter.

Despite the challenging muddy conditions, the Unicorns started strongly with Liam Littore finding the goals in the opening term. Brayden Swenson's dominance in the ruck throughout the match ensured a steady supply of midfield clearances, with Matt Robertson providing aerial dominance across half forward. Scoring opportunities were limited for both sides due to slippery conditions, reflecting on the scoreboard with a quarter-time score of 10-3 in favour of the Unicorns.

The second and third quarters continued in a similar vein, with both teams battling hard for territory. Hugh Radcliffe-Smith, Matt Pereira, Sam Hayes, and James Dozzi kicked one goal each, whilst a dominant Matt Robertson converted two majors to contribute to the Unicorns' growing lead. Wattle Park fought back hard, but the Unicorns' relentless attacking display, along with Swenson's dominance in the ruck, ultimately proved too much to handle.

The final quarter continued to be a grind, with the Unicorns holding steady on their lead. A moment of brilliance from Riley Maringoni sealed the win for MHSOBFC, with a left foot snap finding the goals. Sam Hayes also added his second goal of the match, leading the Unicorns to a 67-47 triumph.

This hard-fought victory will serve as a major confidence boost for the Unicorns. Several players stepped up to deliver impressive performances, particularly Brayden Swenson and Matt Roberston for the talls, and Cam Witt, Sam Hayes, and Will Cardwell (playing his first game this season for the Unicorns) closer to the ground. Next week, MHSOBFC travel to Whitefriars for a must-win encounter if they are to keep their finals hopes alive.
