R14 2024 | Seniors at Whitefriars
MHSOBFC’s annual trek to Whitefriars College Oval brought about another wet July afternoon. The clash was crucial to the side’s finals chances, with the Unicorns sitting 5th on the ladder and Whitefriars in 4th .
From the outset, the slippery surface and relentless rain made it obvious that the game’s winner would be the team that made the most of their opportunities. The first quarter was a slow affair, with Whitefriars taking an early lead. By halftime, the Unicorns had captured the lead, up by 4 points, thanks to a resolute defense and some crafty goals from Matt Robertson and Riley Maringoni.
The third quarter, however, was a turning point. A period of dominance from Whitefriars saw them take control, scoring 5 goals in a 10 minute burst. This third quarter lapse proved the difference in the game, with the Unicorns ultimately going down by 19 points.
Jamie Radcliffe Smith was the side’s best, outstanding in a negating role down back. Nick McKinnon was a relentless force in the midfield. As was Sean Lester, who led from the front, driving the team forward and rallying the troops. Cleve Westley’s safe pair of hands provided a strong backbone for the Unicorns spine.
The Senior side now need results to go their way to qualify for finals, but the boys know if they bring their best football in the last month of the year, there’s more than just hope for a finals berth.
