Thirds Round 12 2021

MHSOBFC v Ormond

The MHSOB Thirds came up against highly placed Ormond on our home deck, keen to test themselves against one of the premier sides of the competition.

A strong performance by our midfield resulted in a competitive contest. Adam Ashton put in a huge effort in the ruck, with his repeat efforts giving our midfielders clean access to the footy. Chris King found himself at the bottom of every pack, spending plenty of time in the muddy square.

Some silky outside run and carry from Nick Clampett provided quality forward entries, despite being few and far between for the ‘corns. Tom Norton and Tom Bulmer acted as targets up forward, allowing us to build upon the strong efforts of our midfield brigade.

The defence was under fire for most of the afternoon, but repelled attack after attack in the first half, led by Tom Feeney. Going into half time with a 4 goal deficit, the ‘corns were within striking distance, but would need to put in a big second half.

Whilst we continue to be competitive around the stoppages, Ormond were a classy outfit, and a top four team for a reason. They stepped it up a gear in the second half, breaking away on the score board. With a couple of players who were clearly a cut above, our lads found it challenging to maintain their efforts from the first half.

A couple of injuries made the second half even more challenging. Callum Hayden - who has been a stalwart down back this year - went off with a broken finger, and Linford Dean, responsible for our solitary goal, unfortunately broke his thumb.

Regardless of the result, our lads can take a few lessons out of the game, and will look to finish off the season well over the next two weeks.

Final Score: MHSOB 1.8-14 def by Ormond 16.13-109

Goal Kickers: L. Dean
