Thirds Round 2 2022

There was no better place to be than 3rds footy early on Saturday morning. We had a really strong squad in, however, as we aren’t the fittest bunch out there, it was decided between the two teams that we would play 16 a-side.

This made for an interesting match as the additional space created a really free flowing and open game that we took advantage of really well.

The first quarter started really strongly; the Corns managed to hold Whitefriars to a goalless first term with us putting one on the scoreboard early. This had us set up really well and got the boys going thinking we were in with a real shout.

We managed to hold on strongly in the second term where Matty Leyland really came in the forefront. He was unbeatable in the one-on-one contests and managed to take a few intercept marks as well. Stu Boggett also had a really strong term putting a lot of pressure on their midfield, which was important, as the game went on, we felt as though we were the ones getting to the footy first and giving ourselves a real opportunity.

The third quarter started with us 10 points down, managing to hold on and kept it to an 11-point margin by 3 quarter time with strong showings from Liam Ferris and good link up play ending in a nice goal from Karl Lugod.

Lach gave the boys a big rev up at 3/4 time as we thought we were in with a real shout, and it worked early. We managed to put in 2 quick goals to take the lead early with Jamie Shulman being a real presence up forward. Unfortunately, Whitfriars responded with a couple of their own, despite a dominant quarter from Cal Hayden doing everything to keep us in the game.

Overall, it was a strong performance and there was a lot that we can take from it going forward. The clean ball movement and our early final term fightback were the highlights.
