R1 2023 | Thirds vs UHS-VU

MHSOBFC kicked off their season against UHS-VU on a lovely autumn Saturday morning at the Woodfull-Miller Oval.

The match started with the Unicorns kicking against the breeze in the first quarter. The team started strongly controlling the ball out of the middle led by Alex Shulman & Dinesh Francis however were unable to take advantage of the team’s momentum kicking five behinds.

The second quarter really turned the game on its head holding UHS-VU scoreless whilst scoring 4.3 themselves with key forward Jamie Shulman leading the charge. The Thirds were able to control the ball and lock it in the forward half through good pressure from defenders Sam Habteslassie, Matt Leyland, and Josh Kulasingham becoming a wall across their half forward line.

A focus area for the team was to carry the momentum into the third quarter and the Thirds did just that kicking three goals to one with Adam Ashton taking control in the ruck.

Being the first game of the season meant that the team’s first half dominance sapped a lot of energy from the team. This allowed UHS-VU to get some good scoring opportunities across the second half however they were unable to take their chances. Conversely, the Unicorns stood strong in capitalising upon opposition turnovers and ran the game out strongly to win by 44 points.

Overall, it was a strong performance first up and creates a lot of confidence as the team look to build over the course of the season.
