R12 2024 | Thirds vs Swinburne
MHSOBFC was looking to back up a disappointing loss to Old Ivanhoe with a game against Swinburne at home. It was also the first game in a triple header as well as Liam Ferris’ long awaited 100th match, putting some extra emphasis on this game.
The team welcomed back ruckman Adam Ashton and utility Saravanan Sritharan after both missed several games with injury. Asho’ took control of the ruck and the midfield got to work ably led by Ali Shulman, Jye Gillespie, and Bryan Hernandez.
Swinburne turned up ready to play, having 12 scoring shots in the first quarter and finishing with 35 for the day. Despite this, Swinburne only scored nine goals in what was a very wet game, reflecting the great job the entire backline did all day under high pressure. Lucas Blatchford led the charge taking several of his customary intercept marks.
Up front, it was a difficult task with little opportunity, but it was great to see Brad Lougheed kick his first goal for the club on debut, and Liam Ferris kick two majors in a much deserved milestone.
Overall, it was a disappointing result with the Unicorns aiming to secure their spot in finals.
However it should be noted that Swinburne played a number of senior players and whilst they were a cut above at times, the Thirds didn’t drop their heads and demanded a four quarter effort from Swinburne. We roll onto a much-needed bye and return against ladder leaders Old Xaverians in another triple header.
Final Score: MHSOBFC 6.5-41 defeated by Swinburne 9.26-80
Goal Kickers: Liam Ferris 2, Toby Eberbach, Bradley Lougheed
