R13 2024 | Thirds vs Old Xaverians
After a bye weekend spent stewing over an unjust loss to a much-changed Swinburne side, MHSOBFC returned to action against an undefeated Old Xaverians. Buoyed by the presence of a number of U/20s players who were enjoying a mid-winter bye, an undersized but enthusiastic side hoped to kick off a significant day for the club with a valiant performance to commence our run home.
While Old Xaverians showed in flashes the ability that had led them to the top of the table, an arm wrestle of a game ensued as it quickly became apparent that the Unicorns were not overawed by the occasion. Midfield superstars Jye Gillespie and Alex Shulman were imperious as always, with both adding goals to their already lethal combination of inside grunt and outside run.
Makeshift ruckman Guy “Speccy” A’Speculo was herculean in his effort, and a back six marshalled by the peerless Lucas Blatchford belied their small stature, to restrict an increasingly frustrated opposition forward group.
With debutant James Harry showing his class on the ball, the Unicorns carried a two goal lead into the closing period of the game. As the intensity lifted again, both sides had their chances, and with thirty seconds to go Old Xaverians drew level with a critical goal from a free kick.
While it was obviously disappointing not to hold onto the lead and win the game, the effort showed that MHSOBFC can match it with any team in their division. With three games left to play, destiny remains in their hands.
