Jnrcorns Round 1 2022

To start our campaign, we came against potential finals bound team Therry Penola, naming 10 debutants for Saturday we kicked off our game at 2PM led onto the ground by new named skipper for the year Petro Pirozek.

After a little giggle and a great speech in the huddle and on the ground we departed for our positions. The first quarter was an absolute battle with our young mids Hammer Kev, Zeus, Braden Swenson and Petro getting the ball clear and winning contests left right and centre. The backline under a bit of pressure early, but looked at ease with Ishaan Chand and Jason Gunaratnam controlling the airways and letting our smalls pounce on the ground ball and swing it to our side. Jordan Marakhov and the one they called Luca “Big Red” Di Lallo both kicked a goal a piece from some clean crumbling and excellent marking. Ending the quarter on a high only down by 7 at quarter time.

The second quarter Therry Penola really showed their class being cleaner with the ball and finding targets with ease, then unfortunately Hammer Kev going hard for the ball as usual suffered a nasty concussion which resulted in us being 1 down even with originally just 18 on the field. With more pain to come Ishaan Chand who looked comfortable down back dislocated his shoulder leaving us with 16 on the field and 20 points down at half time.

The second half was when the true MHSOBFC U19’s colours were shown, showing toughness, grit and resilience throughout the 3rd quarter with our midfielders, forwards and backs working hard nonstop. And kicking 3 goals a piece, both MHS and Therry Penola.

With a few highlights of Nathan Wood our debutant launching a massive kick from outside the 50m arc and Nafi showing his brilliant IQ with some aesthetic front and centre work leading to his first goal. Then to our avail another injury occurred with Kev Pious going down with an achilles injury leaving us with 15 on the field to run out with in the last quarter being down 20.

With sore bodies all around us and everyone cramping up on the field Therry Penola kicked away in the final quarter winning by 70 at the final siren. With plenty of upside for the team moving forward and battling out the game with only 14 at one stage, next week against Bulleen Templestowe is to look forward too.
