The U/20s headed out to play second-placed Brunswick at Alec Gillon Oval. Following a 75-point loss last time they played in round one, the team was confident they could improve on this performance.

The first quarter started poorly against the wind. MHSOB struggled to find flow, while Brunswick was able to find countless options inside forward 50. The home side led by 11 points at the first break.

Going with the wind in the second term came with some momentum for the away team, kicking 5 goals in the term and finding rhythm with their ball movement on a bigger ground, to take the lead by one point at half time.

The third quarter saw the Unicorns back against the wind, again struggling to move the ball up the ground. In turn, Brunswick moved with fluidity and capitalised on their chances, while the few the Unicorns got resulted in minor scores only. Brunswick led by 26 points at the final change.

Brunswick opened the fourth quarter with an early goal, which you’d think to be enough for the Unicorns to drop their heads, but not this lot! The near “miracle on grass” saw the reincarnation of Kobe Bryant, who famously said the “job’s not finished,” and if it wasn’t for small forward Lachlan Sharrock, who kicked four consecutive goals courtesy of some fantastic delivery from hardworking midfielders Cameron Witt and Boopa Munasinghe.

The lead was cut back to five points with only 15 seconds to go…and a goal would do! The Unicorns fell short in the end by just five points but were pleased with the considerable improvement shown in just a few short weeks.

Final Score: MHSOB: 13.7-85 defeated by Brunswick: 13.12-90

Goal Kickers: L. Sharrock 6, J. Higgins 2, B. Swenson, S. Tralaggan, B. Gallop
