R8 2023 | U20s at Pegs

On a chilly, damp winter's morning, the U/20s embarked on the journey to Keilor, ready to face off against the formidable PEGS, who are at the top of the table. As planes roared above, the away team brimmed with anticipation, eager to build on their previous clash against Brunswick in round 7.

Right from the start, the match unfolded as a see-saw battle, with both teams skilfully utilizing the large field to their advantage. It became clear that the winner would be determined by gut running and endurance. Despite a hard-fought opening quarter, MHSOB struggled to convert their forward entries into points, with only star forward Lachie 'Rock' Sharrock managing to score a goal. As the first quarter came to an end, the Unicorns found themselves trailing by 22 points.

The second quarter echoed the intensity of the first, with lightning-fast runs along the flanks becoming pivotal. James 'Dimma' Dimogotsi and Boopa Munasinghe delivered great performances, receiving the ball at half back and utilizing their blistering pace to ignite the Unicorns attacking plays. However, their efforts could only create a solitary goal from Finn Kilgour, allowing PEGS to extend their lead. A massive comeback effort was now crucial for MHSOB in the second half.

Regrettably, the Unicorns were met with an unwavering display of dominance from PEGS, who showcased precisely why they were the team to beat in the competition. Relentless counterattacks, constant running, and surgical precision inside the forward 50 arc allowed PEGS to widen their lead, amassing an 87-point winning margin by the end of the game.

Despite the outcome, a few standout performers emerged for the Unicorns in the defensive line. Minro Eshwara's countless intercept marks and Adam Pacak's lightning-fast and skillful kicks were truly remarkable. With the bye week ahead, the U/20s are determined to regroup, hit the training track, and return for a pivotal clash against St Kevin’s.
