R16 2023 | U20s at St Kevin’s

MHSOB ventured out to T H King Oval on a damp Saturday morning to face off against one their rivals, St Kevin’s. The day started with a buzz and a sense of anticipation for yet another intense showdown. The team was geared up and prepared to take on the challenge. It's noteworthy that this year a remarkable seven players made their debut in the Seniors, showcasing the impressive growth within the squad.

The first quarter can be succinctly summarized as unprepared. Two of the few shining lights were by midfielders Nafi Anaan and Boopa Munasinghe, displaying great resilience and vigour. However, due to the slippery conditions and muddy centre, the midfield struggled to generate much momentum, resulting in sloppy skills. Brayden Swenson continued his outstanding ruck work and newcomer Bailey Elder played a crucial role both in defence and ruck. At the end of the quarter, the scoreboard showed MHSOB 2.2-14 against St Kevin’s 1.4-10.

A motivational push from Head Coach Matty Glover spurred the team into action during the second quarter. The team responded admirably, recording a strong quarter with four goals. Sam Tralaggan's exceptional ruck craft resulted in his first of three goals. Nafi Anaan once again showcased his commitment by taking a spectacular mark, and Christian Lignos contributed with agile play around the ball and goal face. With a score line of 5.5 -35 to 3. -24 in favour of the Unicorns, the atmosphere was charged.

However, the dynamics shifted significantly in the second half. MHSOB found themselves battling to withstand the relentless pressure from their opponents, and the opposing crowd's fervour added to the challenge. Notable defensive efforts from Wayd "Waddler" Nash and a determined chase-down tackle from Will “Youngy” Young, highlighted the team's efforts during this period. As the third quarter concluded, the Unicorns huddled with exhaustion after a valiant defensive stand that ultimately put the home side ahead.

Going into the final quarter, a significant comeback was required to close the gap on St Kevin’s lead. Co-captains Bailey Gallop and Adam Stikoltzik rallied the team for the final stretch. Despite their best efforts, the quarter belonged to the home team. Despite the eventual 26-point loss, the unwavering dedication of the squad couldn't be questioned. Despite being outnumbered and physically smaller, the team displayed immense courage and determination throughout the match. They put their bodies on the line without hesitation, aiming to secure another memorable victory for the season.
