R17 2023 | U20s vs Old McKinnon/Glen Eira

Following a tough loss against St Kevin’s, the U20s looked to bounce back against rivals Old McKinnon/Glen Eira at MHS. The U20s continued to dominate senior selection with an outstanding eight team members selected, providing opportunities for other players to step up and shine.

The Gryphons started with more flare and dash, playing a fast-paced brand of footy through the corridor, resulting in numerous repeated entries and putting the MHSOB defence under immense pressure. Dominant ruckman Brayden Swenson did all he could to keep the home team in the game with a heroic stoppage goal. However, the away side outhunted and outworked the Unicorns leading to a 24-8 lead at quarter time.

MHSOB provided a much-needed response in the second quarter to keep themselves within reach of the Gryphons. Former Richmond Junior Lucas Judd made his debut and provided inspiring dash and courage off half-back, linking up with Dom Hart as the Unicorns piled on three goals in the second term. Unfortunately, Glen Eira maintained their strong performance to resist a comeback, resulting in a 49-27 advantage at halftime.

The third term was once again an issue for the Unicorns as they were jumped by Old McKinnon/Glen Eira. Relentless pressure and swarm-like dash resulted in multiple goals off turnovers. The Unicorns were held goalless while conceding five goals to the opposition.

In contrast to the preceding term, the U20s played inspiring footy in the final term. The players took on the game playing ‘corns footy with speed through the corridor as well as switching and catching the Gryphons off guard. The brand of football allowed players such as Lachlan Sharrock and Boopa Munasinghe to kick goals courtesy of numerous repeated forward 50m entries and the ball locked in the forward half. In spite of the damage being too great to recover, the Unicorns finished the game valiantly, preventing Old McKinnon/Glen Eira from having it their own way and demonstrating the true character of the team.
