MHSOBFC travelled to Beaumaris on a crisp Friday night for an eagerly anticipated clash under lights. With the first night game of the season, hopes were high for a competitive match.
The Unicorns played valiantly in the first quarter, establishing early momentum and showcasing their capabilities in front of the visiting supporters. Vice-captain Lachlan Sharrock and Callum Hackman each kicked a goal, putting early pressure on the scoreboard. Matthew Giarracca's composure off the half back line was evident, as he played a key role in repelling Beaumaris' advances. MHSOBFC ended the quarter trailing by just eight points, but with their heads and spirits high.
The second quarter saw Beaumaris wrestle back ascendency, putting immense pressure on the Unicorns. Despite the challenging circumstances, Jem Duncan’s efforts were relentless, playing a vital part of the defensive unit. All players fought hard to keep the team in the game, however, Beaumaris' relentless attack and cohesion pushed the score further in their favour. They went into the major break leading 8.5-53 to 2.1-13.
In the third quarter, Beaumaris continued to dominate, extending their already established lead. The Unicorns’ defence worked tirelessly to stem the tide and displayed great resilience. Captain Lachlan O’Halloran's efforts through the middle were also commendable despite the overwhelming pressure. However, the team struggled to match Beaumaris' intensity, and the gap on the scoreboard extended to 90 points.
The final quarter saw the home side firmly in control, continuing their relentless scoring. However, MHSOBFC’s players never gave up, fighting bravely until the final siren. Despite the 120-point margin, the Unicorns demonstrated great heart and determination, with some stand out individual performances leaving a lot to like for the coaches, and some key areas to focus on in the coming weeks.
